With new U.S. bankruptcy legislation less than a week from kicking in, consumer bankruptcy lawyers are being swamped by debtors rushing to file ahead of the tough changes.
“Yeah, it’s a free-for-all out there right now,” Orlando bankruptcy lawyer Doug Neway said Tuesday. “Everybody in the world seems to think bankruptcy as we know it is going to end Friday. So there is a tremendous amount of last-minute calls and appointments.”
The new law, which takes effect Monday, was passed in mid-April and touted as the most sweeping reform of federal bankruptcy laws in history.
