Cape Town, South Africa – Debt collectors, credit bureaus, retailers and state law advisers who do not write laws in a language that the average consumer understands came under fire in parliament yesterday.

The portfolio committee on trade and industry was continuing with its public hearings on the controversial National Credit Bill, which has generated more public responses than anticipated, all of which have taken much longer to deal with individually because of the emotive issues involved. As a result, the hearings have been extended by a few days.

Yesterday debt collectors tried to undo their generally negative image as bullies and crooks by stating that they operated under a strict code of conduct. Any collectors who stepped over the line was severely reprimanded, fined or stripped of their licence.
