Health care is expected to account for $1 of every $5 spent in the United States in another decade. That means a rise in out-of-pocket expenses, such as the co-pays for medicine, from about $850 this year to about $1,400 in 2016, a 5.3 percent annual increase. The cost of health insurance is projected to rise even more quickly during that same time to 6.4 percent annually. Over the coming decade, spending on health care will continue to outpace the overall economy.

New York Times interview with Kate Sullivan, director of health care policy at the United States Chamber of Commerce stated “Workplace coverage is becoming unaffordable for many employers and employees.” The average cost to employers rose by an average of $6,227 per employee in 2003, according to a study released by Hewitt Associates.

Diane Rowland, vice president of the Kaiser Family Foundation and executive director of the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured, testified before Congress on the fragile state of American Health Care.
