Wachovia Corp. fell short in a bid for credit card issuer MBNA Corp. and dropped out of talks a week ago, people familiar with the situation said Thursday.

The Charlotte, N.C.-based bank was a finalist with its cross-town rival Bank of America as recently as June 20. Investment bankers opened an auction on MBNA months ago, those people said.
