The number of Americans filing for bankruptcy is soaring, as hard-up individuals seek to beat the deadline for the introduction of tougher laws making it more difficult to write off personal debts.

In the three months to the end of June, more than 467,000 bankruptcy filings were received by US courts, up 66,000 from the previous period and the highest reading since comparable records began in 1995.

The rise comes after bankruptcy filings had been levelling off and even began to decline slightly last year.
