Vodafone has been criticised for employing threatening tactics to get late-paying customers to settle their bills.

A debt-collection agency hired by the phone company to chase customers with overdue bills has been accused of using heavy handed techniques to recover money.

One customer said she was terrified that a neighbourhood hardman was going to knock on her door after receiving a letter saying someone who “may be known” to her would be calling to her home to settle her debt.

The Consumers’ Association of Ireland said others had complained about similar letters. “It’s contrived to be embarrassing and cause upset,” said Dermott Jewell, a spokeman for the organisation. “It’s a form of bullying and is very unpleasant.”
