At last Wednesday’s meeting of the Scott County (VA) Board of Supervisors, the board chose to seek proposals from firms to assist in collecting the nearly $1 million of delinquent real estate taxes on the books.

Appalachian Regional Collections of Gate City, represented by Attorney Mike Carrico and Michelle Jenkins, originally approached the board a few months ago about seeking outside assistance to help collect delinquent taxes owed to the county.

This month Carrico asked the board to consider accepting proposals for requests on providing collection services for the county. After some discussion, the board approved on a 6-0 vote to seek RFPs for the collection of delinquent real estate taxes.

According to figures provided by Scott County Treasurer Martha Bledsoe, the county is owed $904,468 in real estate taxes from 1985 through 2004. This figure includes penalty and interest charges of $65,743 and $181,154, respectively.
