A phone call from a bill collector is never a welcome one, especially when it comes after surgery or another major medical event.
But hospitals and doctors want to be paid without losing a patient. That has business booming for Bill San Marco’s San Antonio-based collection agency, DataSearch Inc.
It’s a tricky business. “The hospital wants you to get the money for them, but they don’t want you to beat up the patient,” San Marco said. “We walk a fine line.”
DataSearch has 35 people collecting payments for clients including Baptist Health System and University Health System, and San Marco said he has immediate openings for 20 more experienced collectors.
