The United Kingdom’s Office of Fair Trading will investigate how often debt collectors threaten, misinform and overcharge debtors as demand for their services grows amid record individual insolvencies.


The OFT said on Wednesday it wanted to see how its guidance on fair business practice, issued in July 2003, had impacted the behaviour of debt collection businesses, whose numbers have nearly doubled to around 500 over the past two years.
