The Oregon State Senate Thursday unanimously approved a bill that would give debtors in the state an additional month of protections from garnishments tied to debt collection cases.

The bill allows for two months of benefits protected from garnishment from creditors and debt collectors. The benefits that are being protected include Social Security payments, worker’s compensation, and unemployment insurance.

Oregon’s House will now vote on the measure for final passage.

Provisions in the bill require creditors and collectors to work out garnishment arrangements taking into account the newly-exempt funds after a judgment has been made against a debtor.
